Past Events Dr. Al Jameson speaks at Ron Paul Rally

Friday, Jan. 18th: Rally to raise awareness about Ron Paul on in the RMC.
Rice Students for Bringing Ron Paul to Rice and the Rice Libertarians hosted a Ron Paul Rally on Friday, Jan. 11th at Rice University. Between thirty and forty students attended.

Rice student, Jerry Vera introduced the event's speaker, Dr. Al Jameson. Jerry said, "I'm rather new to politics. But the media seemed to report little on Dr. Paul, which just made me want to learn more about him."

Dr. Jameson opened his remarks saying, "It's time to get back to that 3,500 word document that says it all, the Constitution." He alluded to why there so much excitement about Ron Paul: "A lot of new voters are getting involved because they feel they really have a choice now." He said, "I'm new to grassroots politics, but what a difference it seems to make." Crowd at Ron Paul Rally

Dr. Jameson explained his approach to thinking about government policy. "I ask people to name one federal agency that the government runs better than a private company." We need a system that respects individuals "because it's all based on personal responsibility."

"We have a big health care problem in this country...this is because of the third-party payer system." Instead, We should "restore direct relationships between patients and their doctors." Dr. Paul is "fighting for those things, but he's a lone voice." Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies have well-paid lobbyists to help them get the Medicare Drug Benefit passed.

Asked about America's monetary system, Dr. Jameson responded, "About every time we had a war, America abandoned the gold system to print money and pay for the fight." He pointed out that the price of oil recently increased three-fold with respect to the dollar, but only two-fold with respect to the euro, and it is the same price with respect to gold. "Today Canada has a stronger currency, when it has never been that way." "Really, backing the money system [with gold] is another check and balance on the government."

The monetary system also affects America's dependence on foreign powers. "If we bring spending back into balance then there will be less dependence on foreign countries." America's foreign policy is one reason we must borrow so much from foreigners. "We have bases in 130 countries," which is expensive to maintain. "China and India are using diplomacy [to secure resources], we are using war as a tool, when it is an outdated method."

Asked about immigration by a student from Mexico, Dr. Jameson related how he came to America from abroad when he was a child and had to go through all the legal hoops to gain citizenship and how a grandparent had to wait twenty years to come here legally.

Dr. Paul's Congressional office communicated that he would likely not be able to speak on campus before the Texas presidential primary, but when his schedule opens up after campaigning he may be able to schedule a visit to Rice.
